The Elliott Museum was founded by part-time Stuart resident Harmon Elliott as a tribute to his father, Sterling, a prolific inventor. Collectively, Sterling and Harmon were awarded 222 patents throughout their lifetimes.
Sterling Elliott’s inventions had a tremendous impact on the way we live today, particularly on automotive design. His quadricycle solved many problems that plagued the early four-wheeled automobile chassis; its steering design was the forerunner of the rack and pinion steering found in today’s cars.
The Elliott Museum pays tribute to Sterling’s inventions and features one of the finest displays of vintage automobiles in the country, including Sterling’s quadricycle and the Elliott family’s Stanley Steamer car.
At The Elliott, you’ll find an eclectic collection with something for everyone, from our transportation gallery to life-size dioramas of turn-of-the-century shops and residences. A varied and changing schedule of special art exhibitions and expert historical and artistic lectures offers numerous reasons to visit often.
The Elliott Museum is owned and operated by the Historical Society of Martin County, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating our region’s heritage. Our geographic focus is on Martin County and the surrounding Treasure Coast region, along Florida’s southeastern shore.
